Our River Curriculum

Lesson: Boats & Bridges

Grade: 1st-6th (ALL GRADES)

Content Area: Science, Engineering, Team Building 

Field Trip Connection: National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium
Objective:  Students will work as a team to build a make-shift boat and bridge.  

Lesson: Career Exploration  

Grade: 1st-2nd; 3rd-4th; 5th-6th

Content Area: Vocabulary, Social-Emotional, Goal-Setting 

Field Trip Connection: River Captain’s Choice 

Objective:  Students will build river-related vocabulary knowledge and consider career interests for the future.

Lesson: Keelboat Annie 

Grade: 1st-2nd; 3rd-4th; 5th-6th

Content Area: Literacy, Folktales, Creative Writing 

Field Trip Connection: River Captain’s Choice 

Objective:  Students will read about characters from tall tales and write an original folktale about the Mississippi River. 

Lesson: River Crossing

Grade: 1st-2nd; 3rd-4th; 5th-6th

Content Area: Logical Reasoning, Team building, Cooperation 

Field Trip Connection: Scott County Park 

Objective:  Students will practice logical reasoning and cooperative skills as they work as teams to play movement-based games. 

Lesson: Mussels

Grade: 1st-2nd; 3rd-4th; 5th-6th

Content Area: Animal Science, Literacy

Field Trip Connection: Nahant Marsh 

Objective:  Students will learn about the physical characteristics of mussels.

Lesson: River Beds

Grade: 1st-2nd; 3rd-4th; 5th-6th

Objective:  Students will learn about the major rivers in the world and how mammals sleep in or around the rivers.
